It's nice to have a featured book on the front page (at least we think it is), but what about some of those we've had in the past which you might have wanted to look at but just hadn't gotten around to. I thought I would start this page to sort of keep track of the past featured books. We generally have a little more to say about the featured book, so maybe the extra information might help someone.

How about Books, including book care, how to tell first editions and other ordinary and esoteric knowledge about books. And if you would like to pass along something you've found useful, let us know.

This page is about all of that and anything else that comes up we think you might be interested in. No telling what will show up here. I'm sure we'll duplicate information on the rest of the site, but a lot of it will be unique.

Just a reminder, repeat customers through our site receive a 10% discount. So, if there is a book you would like to order from any of the publishers we deal with, we can order it for you and maybe save you a little money. Just e-mail us at [email protected].

PLEASE, if you find a mistake on our site, notify us. We invite your comments. Thanks for looking -

"Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night." - Edgar Allan Poe.
It has been nearly two centuries since Poe left to the world a trove of literary treasures that have inspired generation after generation as few purveyors of the written word ever have. In Evermore, fifteen writers examine Edgar Allan Poe from as many different perspectives. In each of EVERMORE’s tales, Poe and his legacy come to life in new and unprecedented ways, proving that the master himself remains just as intriguing, and just as vital, as when the unsuspecting readers first found themselves taunted by an avian horror who spoke to them nothing more than the simple word “Nevermore.”

Keith Laumer (1925-1993) was probably best know for his Bolo (sentient robotic tanks) and Retief (an exceptionally Terran diplomat) stories. The Bolo stories started in 1960 with Combat Unit in Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine. The latest series began with the Baen Books collections of new Bolo stories written by various authors. Bill Keith was approached in 1996 to write some of the first of these. He has a web page up at Bolos! which is "a showcase for some of the Bolo scenes I created in Photoshop as a kind of brain-nudger". BTW: Bill Keith has also continues Keith Laumers Retief series in Retiefs Peace.

??? Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis.
767 pages; Fine condition. This one has the Ice Blue cover with beautiful witch. Not a used book. No creases. Un-read tight. Solid, completely clean. An excellent gift! This edition presents all seven books, unabridged, in one impressive volume. The books are presented here according to Lewis' preferred order, each chapter graced with an illustration by the original artist, Pauline Baynes.

The books of The Chronicles of Narnia series, in the order of their publication, are:

  1. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1950)
  2. Prince Caspian (1951)
  3. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
  4. The Silver Chair (1953)
  5. The Horse and His Boy (1954)
  6. The Magician's Nephew (1955)
  7. The Last Battle (1956)
The first American publisher, Macmillan, put numbers on the books and used that publication order. C.S. Lewis' stepson, Douglas Gresham, suggested reading the books in the chronological order of:
  1. The Magician's Nephew (1955)
  2. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (1950)
  3. The Horse and His Boy (1954)
  4. Prince Caspian (1951)
  5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
  6. The Silver Chair (1953)
  7. The Last Battle (1956)
This was the numbering of the books when HarperCollins took over the series from McMillian. "The Chronicles of Narnia" trade publication by HarperCollins has the following statement "Although The Magician's Nephew was written several years after C.S. Lewis first began The Chronicles of Narnia, he wanted it to be read as the first book in the series. HarperCollins is happy to present these books in the order in which Professoer Lewis preferred". That statement may be a little strong as the following statement indicates [ from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Narnia ]:
'Gresham quoted Lewis' reply to a letter from an American fan in 1957, who was having an argument with his mother about the order:

"I think I agree with your order (i.e. chronological) for reading the books more than with your mother's. The series was not planned beforehand as she thinks. When I wrote The Lion I did not know I was going to write any more. Then I wrote P. Caspian as a sequel and still didn't think there would be any more, and when I had done The Voyage I felt quite sure it would be the last. But I found as I was wrong. So perhaps it does not matter very much in which order anyone read them. I'm not even sure that all the others were written in the same order in which they were published.'"
In either order, I think you will enjoy the series. It has been a favorite since it was published starting over 50 years ago and I certainly enjoyed them when I first read them over 40 years ago.

The Hitchhiker's Trilogy, Includes The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; The Restaurant at the End of the Universe; Life, The Universe and Everything; So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish; Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams and Illustrated by Gary Ruddell.
Book Club Edition, 839 pages; Near Fine/Fine. Not a used book. Very soft bump to top corner tips. Boards are straight, tips are pointed, spine is square and pages are clean. DJ is great! Fantastic cover art work. In protective sleeve. An Excellent gift!

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Suppose a good friend calmly told you over a round of drinks that the world was about to end? And what if the world really did come to an end, but instead of being blown away, you found yourself hitching a ride on a spaceship with your buddy as traveling companion?

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe: Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle through space powered by pure improbability - and desperately in search of a place to eat.

Life, The Universe and Everything: The unhappy inhabitants of the planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads - so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the killer robots of Krikkit and their goals of annihilation...

So Long, and Thanks For All The Fish: Left at the end of LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING with the address for God's Final Message To His Creation, Arthur Dent let this crucial information slip his mind.

Mostly Harmless: It's easy to become disheartened when your planet has been demolished for an unnecessary hyperspacial express route, the woman you love has vanished in a misunderstanding about the nature of space/time, the spaceship in which you are travelling crashed in flames on a remote and Bob-fearing planet, and all you have to fall back on are a few sandwich-making skills.

So why is it called the The Hitchhiker's Trilogy when there are five included? A poor grasp of arithmetic!
