I was very honored, and not a little impressed, by the invitation to give the Stratford Little Lectures, this year of grace and grim anxiety, 1955. For a few years I was an historian. My scholarly apparatus by now is certainly rusty; but I retain as vivid a conviction as ever that, if current opinions and popular prejudices are not to impose themselves on our minds, we must judge them in the light of historical knowledge and historical experience.
