Negroes have been present in America from the very beginning of the nation - even before the Mayflower. But their deeds and accomplishments until recently have largely unchronicled. Consequently, blacks today are given little credit for the greatness of the nation. This is an unjust and tragic situation, for they have contributed in many ways. America is impoverished because of it. For few whites have developed a proper appreciation for the contributions of blacks. And few blacks have found a basis for pride in the contribution of their race to the national heritage. That this is so is one of the tragedies of America, one which this book, hopefully, may in some small way help to correct.
