1 13315Crum, A. R. (Ed) Romance Of American Petroleum And Gas - Volume I - Illustrated
Romance of American NY 1911 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover Very Good with no dust jacket
363 pages; Very Good/No Jacket. Very large coffee table size book. Shelf rub to edges. Boards are straight, spine and hinges are solid, pages are clean. Top page edges gilt, Red Leather and Cloth binding, no dust jacket; H.C. FOLGER JR. gilt stamped lower left corner front cover, four (4) tree/floral designs gilt stamped on spine with one between the gilt stamped ROMANCE OF AMERICAN PETROLEUM AND GAS and CRUM AND DUNGAN, floral end papers front and back. Heavy stock paper, tight binding. The text is clear on fairly bright paper which has a hint of age in some cases. Planned as a three-volume set, Volume I deals with the discovery and developments, men and events in Appalachian field, during first 50 years of the petroleum industry. Mr. Crum died after Volume I was published and Volume II was completed by others about 1921. The first part of the book, to about page 250, is an abbreviated history of the petroleum and gas industry up to about 1911. The second part, to page 350, gives a short (generally a page or less) biography of prominent people in the business along with a picture/photograph of the person on slightly darker stock than the text. Leading off the set of biographies is the well known John D. Rockefeller. Following that are some who are somewhat less know to the American public such as John D. Archbold, Henry H. Rogers, William Rockefeller, and others. On page 301 is the biography of Henry Clay Folger, Jr. with a facing photograph. Here we find that Mr. Folger was one of the most distinguished students of Shakespeare in the United States and had probably the best library of Shakespeariana in the US, consisting of of more than twenty thousand volumes. The Folger Shakespeare Library opened in 1932 as a gift to the American nation from Henry Clay Folger and his wife Emily Jordan Folger. It is home to the world’s largest and finest collection of Shakespeare materials and to major collections of other rare Renaissance books, manuscripts, and works of art. Mr. Folger is the person whose name is stamped in gilt on the cover and this leads one to believe the book may have been the personal copy of Mr. Folger. The last part of the book, before the Index and to page 359, deals with the companies of those times.
